Internet, apps and language

With an eSIM from abroad, WhatsApp and Google work just like at home.

  • On hotel wifi or a Chinese SIM, Google and WhatsApp do not work. With an eSIM from abroad, they do.
  • Buy the eSIM ahead and install it at home on wifi. Turn it on when you land.
  • Key apps. Alipay, WeChat, Amap for maps, Trip.com and a camera translator.
  • Little English outside hotels. A camera translator helps with menus and signs.

Questions about internet, apps and language

Do Google and WhatsApp work with an eSIM?

Yes. With an eSIM bought outside China, Google, WhatsApp, Gmail and Instagram work just like at home. On hotel wifi they do not, so use your eSIM data.

What about a Chinese SIM?

It gives you a local number, but with it Google, WhatsApp and most Western apps do not open. For a short trip, an eSIM from abroad is easier.

When should I install the eSIM?

Buy it a few days ahead, install it at home on wifi and leave it off. Turn it on when you land. Check first that your phone supports eSIM and is not locked to your carrier.

Which map app should I use?

On iPhone, Apple Maps works very well in China. On Android, use Amap, also called Gaode. Google Maps opens with the eSIM, but its China maps are out of date.

Which translator should I use?

One with a camera mode, for menus and signs. Google Translate works with the eSIM, and the WeChat translator is good too. Download Chinese for offline use, just in case.

How do I get a taxi?

With DiDi, which has an English app and also runs inside Alipay. You enter the destination, see the price first and pay by card. No need to talk to the driver.
